This past summer I grew 6 chili pepper plants and had a wonderful yield.
Now that they're all dried out, I'm going to make crushed red peppers out of them, so needless to say, all my friend and immediate family will be receiving a jar.
Through out the summer and during harvesting time, I collected ripe chili peppers and placed them on a flat baking sheet to dry out completely.
Now that they're all dry, I'll place them in my blender and make crushed peppers. Once they're crushed I'll place them in small mason jars. For anyone who's never done this and may decide to try this in the future, be very careful of your eyes and wash your hands thoroughly each time you handle the peppers.
In the past I've found my homemade crushed peppers have been hotter than the store bought. I've also decided to make crushed habanaro peppers this past summer and they're great for adding a spicy kick to any dish you may want to make more exciting.

Lydia..we like crushed red peppers on pizza, but that's about the only way I use it, except for chili.
ReplyDeleteI've heard some funny stories about people who didn't thoroughly wash their hands after handling peppers, so that was a thoughtful reminder! :)
It's snowing here..with snow squalls predicted for tomorrow!
Hello Jan,
ReplyDeleteI love crushed red peppers on pizza. I also use it in pasta dishes, on garlic bread and many other dishes I'd like to add a nice zing to.
I can't believe it's snowing in our area!!!!
Your so far South!
I'm sure the snow melts fast where you live. It lasts til May here.
Wishing you a very happy evening,
Lydia
Hi Lydia I used to grow a lot of chile and your right watch out for the eyes that smarts haha Have a great day today
ReplyDeleteLydia..no, I live right on Lake Erie, right in the snow-belt, where we get all the lake effect snow.
ReplyDeleteActually, we are under a warning now, until Saturday, and we will get many more inches of snow, on top of what we already have! :)
I loved crushed hot peppers. It gives that xtra kick when you want it. Thanks for sharing with us
ReplyDeleteHello Jamerson, I'm always growing one type of hot peper in my garden during the summer. Next season it will be Thai peppers.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day,
Lydia
Hello Jan,
I don't know why I always got the impression you lived down south. I live in rochester, ny right near the lake (ontario). We get tons of lake snows here too. When there's a blizard at my house with white out conditions, I can drive 15 to 20 minutes away from my house and it won't be snowing at all. It's amazing!
Wishing you a very nice day,
Lydia
Hello Dave,

Lydia..you probably thought I lived down south, because that's where I'm from, and I've written about it a lot!
ReplyDeleteToday, we're gettting more snow..and sunshine, too! :)
I hope you have a great day--I know you'll be doing something creative!
It's fun to read about your gardening and preserving, Lydia. We always did a lot of that, but I never processed red chilies like this..it's a wonderful idea and a wonderful gift idea. And the peppers are absolutely beautiful too:)
ReplyDeleteHello Linda,
ReplyDeleteThank you, I took the photos in the summer. red peppers are so easy to dry and they add such a nice kick to meals.
Have a nice evening,
